Ted Bond, sadly, passed away on Tuesday 16th December after a short illness; he was 84.
For some three decades Ted filled a wide range of roles in the YCBA, including Treasurer, Membership Secretary and Yorkshire League Secretary. He became a Vice-President in 2011, after relinquishing his other duties.
In 2010 the EBU presented him with the prestigious Dimmie Fleming award for service to his county.

It is with great sadness that we have to report that Peter passed away on 30 September 2014 after a courageous battle with cancer. Peter was a founder member of Doncaster Bridge Club and served on its Management Committee for most of the time of his membership, working hard to ensure its successful operation and development. He also devoted a great deal of time teaching bridge to both those new to the game and those wishing to improve. He was a member of the YCBA Management Board from 2004 to 2008 and for many years organised and directed the Newcomers Pivot Teams event. Peter will be greatly missed and our thoughts are with his wife Gail, sons Matthew and Edward (all of whom play bridge) and their families at this sad time.

We are sad to report that Helen Dunham died on 27th August 2014, at the age of 103. She was a member of Wakefield Bridge Club for over 30 years and played with her husband Fred. In 2007, Graham Jepson presided over a 70th wedding anniversary event at Wakefield. Helen used to play for Wakefield in the Yorkshire League, but has been living in Leicestershire since 2009. The YCBA President, Hubert Castle, died peacefully on Thursday 20th February 2014.
He was Chairman of the YCBA from 1976 to 1990 and Chairman of Huddersfield BC for many years. Bridge was his chief hobby, closely followed by gardening and, in his younger days, tennis. He played with a series of partners including his wife Cath, to whom he was happily married for over sixty years. He leaves five grandsons and ten great-grandchildren.
He had passed his 100th birthday on 24th May last year.
On the day after his birthday the family had invited over thirty bridge players to join them for a celebration lunch at Woodsome Hall Golf Club. As he did not want any presents, Hubert had indicated that a donation to the Salvation Army would be appreciated. When the Salvationists heard about this, they responded by sending a band to play for us after lunch in glorious sunshine. Not even the family knew that he was interested in the Salvation Army. Asked why he had chosen them, Hubert replied: ‘Because it was the only place where I could get a bath when I was in the army!’
The Castle Swiss Pairs, named after him, continues to run every year at Huddersfield Bridge Club.

We are very sad to report the death on Tuesday 10th September 2013 of Ian Rodger.
Ian was a past chairman of Bramhope Bridge Club and also part owner of Leeds Bridge Club for several years, as well as being a valued member of the Yorkshire Management Board. Latterly he has played his bridge at Harrogate and Ilkley, representing Harrogate in the Yorkshire Leagues. Ian survived his wife, Mary, by just over 2 years. He will be greatly missed by his 2 sons, Tim and Chris, and by his many friends and bridge partners.

Jean Forrester died aged 90 after a short illness on Thursday 13 June 2013. She had been playing regularly until just a month before her death and was a stalwart member of Wakefield Bridge Club for many years. She had also enjoyed playing as a member at Dewsbury, Ossett and Barnsley clubs, especially since the death of her husband in 1991. From that time on she devoted herself to the game, and spent many happy holidays playing at locations across the British Isles (including the Channel Islands!) right to the end.
A Premier National Master, she represented Dewsbury ‘A’ team in the Yorkshire League until Dewsbury left the League, and then she played for Wakefield ‘B’ team up to and including her 90th year. Her enthusiasm for and expertise at the game continued undiminished: in September 2012 she won the YCBA Kath Grimoldby Sim pairs with a score of 67.2%; and after three events she stood in second place in the 2012-13 Victor Ludorum listings. In that same September she won the Club evening event yet again, and had a report of her outstanding declarer play published in the Yorkshire Post.
Jean played with a range of partners, and was unfailingly courteous and generous to them all, and of course to her opponents – it was a pleasure to play at her table. She will be sorely missed not only at Wakefield but also at those other clubs and holiday events where she took such pleasure in the game.

Sad to say one of the founder members of Halifax Bridge Club, Peggy Boocock, passed away on 22nd February 2013.
She had been a member of the club for over 60 years.

Yorkshire has lost one of its most respected and longest serving tournament players. The death on 15th January 2013 of David Colley at his home in Beverley has brought to an end a remarkable bridge playing career which began when he first represented the county in the 1952/3 season.
David was taught to play bridge in Hull in the late 1940’s by his father, John, who was himself one of Yorkshire’s leading players of that era. They regularly played together in the annual ‘Roses’ match against Lancashire until 1961 when David formed a partnership with the late Eric Pudsey and they continued to represent the county until 1977.
David, by this time, had already formed another partnership with Andrew Petrie and this continued for many years during which time they played regularly for Yorkshire in the Tollemache trophy, reaching the final on a number of occasions.
Due to ill-health, David played his last match in the Yorkshire League in November, 2011. He had played for Hull continuously for 60 years – a remarkable achievement.
He played regularly at Hull bridge club right up to the end, winning a duplicate session with his friend, David Wilson, less than a week before his death.
David will, I know, be remembered affectionately by all who knew him and we are very grateful for his major contribution to the bridge scene in Yorkshire over such a long period of time. Philip Mason.

Many people will be saddened to learn of the death of John Payne, long associated with Brighouse Bridge Club. Latterly, John was their match secretary and captain of the A team. He died of a heart attack on 23rd October 2012 and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
