Current Season 2024-25
Appeal decision
An appeal was made against a first instance TD ruing in division 1 match between Doncaster A and Sheffield A, played on 16th February. The appeal has now been determined and the result in victory points is unchanged (17-3 to Sheffield).
Tiebreaker for sixth and seventh places in division 1
The competition rules provide that if two or more teams are tied on victory points the tie is to be broken as provided in the EBU White Book. In division 1, Sheffield B and Doncaster A each finished on 41 victory points. The tiebreaker is the result of the head to head match between the teams, which Sheffield B won by 11-9 victory points. This means that Sheffield B are officially placed sixth in division 1 and Doncaster A are seventh.
Unfortunately we are unable to change the order in which the teams are listed in the league table in EBULeague. This is because the EBU software used to compile the league table lists the teams in alphabetical order when they are level on victory points and average points per match.
End of season round-up
The final day of the 2024-25 season of the Yorkshire League saw exciting conclusions to the contests for the seven divisional titles and for promotion and to avoid relegation.
Sheffield A have retained the division 1 tile after narrowly defeating York A 11-9 in their top of the table match. At the other end of the table a tie break was needed to decide sixth and seventh places. Both Sheffield B and Doncaster A lost their final matches but the one point gained by Sheffield was enough for them to leapfrog their rivals. The tiebreak was Sheffield’s narrow victory over Doncaster earlier in the season by 11-9 in VPs, just 6 imps,
In division 2 second placed Thirsk won their final match 17-3, but this was not quite enough to close the gap on the leaders Olicana Legates who gained 14 points from their match. So well done, Olicana, butThirsk did gain promotion and we believe this is the first time in the long history of the Yorkshire League that a team from Thirsk has reached the first division. A remarkable achievement for one of the county’s smaller clubs in terms of membership.
In division 3, Leeds C lost their last two matches, but consistent form earlier in the season left them as divisional winners by three points. Wakefield A took 18 from their last match to gain the second promotion place just ahead of Wensleydale and Brighouse Aces.
In division 4 York C finished just two clear of Huddersfield A; both teams won their final matches by 18-2 and were a long way ahead of the rest.
Halifax A were comfortable winners of division 5 by 16 points from Leeds D, who themselves had a margin of another 18 points over the other teams.
Sheffield C had already won division 6 with a match to spare, and they racked up another 20-,0 win to end the season with seven wins out of seven, 127 points out of a possible 140. Watch out, division 5 teams next season, if Sheffield maintain this form. York E filled the other promotion place.
In division 7 Olicana Legionnaires also won all their seven matches to end on 113 points, 15 ahead of second placed Wetherby C.
Congratulations to all of the above on their achievements, and thanks to all who took part, and particularly the match secretaries, team captains, duplimators, scorers and others involved in the organisation of the matches.
At the YCBA AGM on 8th June 2024 a question was asked about the Yorkshire League Rules relating to rearrangement of matches by agreement between the teams. The Yorkshire League Committee (YLC) agreed that a statement of its approach to the application of the Rules would be placed on the website.
- There are no restrictions on teams agreeing to play a match on a date earlier than the scheduled date in the fixture list. The approval of the YLC is not required.
- Postponing a match to a date after the one scheduled in the fixture list is more problematic. There are some circumstances, particularly near the end of the season, when teams may gain an advantage, or be perceived to have gained an advantage, from playing with the knowledge of the results achieved by other teams in the division on the match day in question. However, postponements may be allowed with the approval of the YLC. The teams should make a joint application for such approval by email to the League Secretary in good time, and preferably not less than 14 days before the match day in question. The application should give the reasons for the request.
- If a match is played after a scheduled date without prior YLC approval then, depending on the circumstances, either or both teams will be in default, and victory point penalties may be applied as provided in the Rules.
The YLC do not expect a significant increase in the number of postponed matches. The wording of the Rules and the way they are applied may be reconsidered for future seasons, if it appears that teams are exploiting the current arrangements by requesting approval of a postponement when they could have played a match on the scheduled date by bringing in reserve players.
