Yorkshire win NICL final
Yorkshire have won the A team final of the National Inter-County League – for the first time in the history of the competition. There was also a strong performance by Yorkshire in the B team final – they were second. Congratulations to both teams and to the selectors.
Dave Robinson has sent the following report:
Well done Yorkshire A team
It’s been a memorable year for the county. We already were the winners of the inter-counties President’s Cup and we had won the Northern Bridge League for the first time.
As winners of the NBL, we were invited to play a one day final against the winners of the other four regional events. The previous year’s winners were also invited, to make a six team final.
On Sunday the team of Alan Jarvis & Tom Copeland, Sandra Penfold & Brian Senior, Frank Dixon & Paul Brereton, and Tony Sowter & Dave Robinson made the arduous trip to RealBridge to compete.
After three of the five matches Kent, the previous winners, had a fair lead.
In the next round, Yorkshire had a good match and Kent a poor one. So their lead was reduced to a small but significant margin – and the teams would meet in the last match of eight deals. Yorkshire did well in the first four deals and had almost done enough to win, providing we had at least one good result in the last four. We managed that, and kept our nerve, and in the end very much deserved the victory.
The good news too is Yorkshire automatically get a place in the final next year.
Special thanks to Alan Brosgill for his hard work behind the scenes.
