  • Rob Turner (1949 - 2019)

It is with great sadness that we have been informed that Rob lost his battle with pancreatic cancer on 24 November 2019 shortly after his 70th birthday.
Rob had played bridge in Yorkshire for nearly forty years and for most of the last twenty had been an EBU Tournament Director. He ran many local events and supported numerous county and national competitions as well as being involved in the training of new Directors.
However he will be best remembered by YCBA as the county's webmaster for establishing the first website in 1999 and developing the current website. His outstanding work maintaining the website for the benefit of all YCBA members will never be forgotten. In particular the speed at which the Yorkshire League results were displayed sometimes within minutes of matches ending contributed enormously to the enjoyment of members participating in the county league.
Rob also served on the YCBA Management Board for a number of years and undertook the role of Assistant Secretary from 2001 to 2008.
Our deep and sincere condolences are extended to Mary, his life and bridge partner for forty years as well as his wider family, friends and bridge partners.
There will not be a funeral service. Rob decided to donate his body for scientific research to benefit others.
Please visit the Sheffield Bridge Club website where more information about Rob's immense contribution to Sheffield Bridge Club can be viewed.

  • YCBA Development Day - Chairman's Observations
The members meeting held at the Hilton, Leeds on Sunday 18th November together with the YCBA development day was a great success. First my thanks go to the speakers on the day which included ones from ArcScorer and BriAn, which showed us the future of how we will be inputting scores and Phil Godfrey for stepping in to do Pianola at the last moment. This was apart from his duties at discussing EBU Score and some of the new laws together with BB@B with Ron Millet. Bev Purvis, the club liaison officer at the EBU, was also present.
Two main items came from the members meeting itself and these were the investment in technology which is going to be offered by the county to clubs. This will include, hopefully, everything from whiteboards to new technology and discussions as to how this will be implemented will be at our next board meeting in January. The idea of having seminars aimed at non-experts was brought up and it seemed that a day set aside would be a popular idea. This will be discussed at the next Bridge development meeting.
It is likely we will be holding the members meeting at development days in the future, so if you have any ideas that you would like to be presented at one of these, please let a board member know.
    Nick Woolven
